What Is Lockout/Tagout?

Most industrial accidents are caused by the uncontrolled release of hazardous energy. Many of these accidents can be prevented by proper Lockout/Tagout procedures. To perform service and maintenance work on industrial equipment safely, you must understand the importance of energy control and proper Lockout/Tagout procedures.

A Lockout is a method of keeping equipment from being set in motion and endangering workers. A lockout device actually stops power from being turned on.

A Tagout system involves putting the energy isolating device into a safe position and attaching a visual warning that the equipment has been shut down.

Tags can also list reasons that the equipment is out of service. Tags should only be used to provide information.

Regulation in Australia asks that duty of care be taken and the employer has the choice of Lockout, Tagout or both. As an employer you must ensure that the system used is adhered to by your employees. Locks and tags are a deterrent only, they do not disconnect the power source from the equipment. Keep your employees safe by including a thorough Lockout/Tagout program and reviewing it with affected employees regularly.
